The UVic Image Markup Tool Project

“Many tools exist for marking up text in XML. However, for a number of our projects, we need to be able to mark up images — by which I mean that we need to be able to describe and annotate images, and store the resulting data in TEI XML files. For this, relatively few tools exist, and those that do are either rather too complicated for novices not expert at markup (for example the Edition Production Technology) or use a proprietary file format (such as INote). Our aim is to produce a tool which creates conformant TEI P5 XML files, but which has a simple enough interface that it can be used by people with little or no experience in editing XML code.”

CrossTech: DOI: What Do We Got?

Following the JISC seminar last week on persistent identifiers (#jiscpid on Twitter) there was some discussion about DOI and its role within a Linked Data context. John Erickson has responded with a very thoughtful post DOIs, URIs and Cool Resolution, which ably summarizes how the current problem with DOI in that the way the DOI is is implemented by the handle HTTP proxy may not have kept pace with actual HTTP developments. (For example, John notes that the proxy is not capable of dealing with 'Accept' headers.) He has proposed a solution, and the post has attracted several comments.

""Theses and Dissertations have long been inaccessible due to lack of a free, powerful interface to search all of these documents in a single location," said Erik Reeves, CEO. "These documents represent an important compendium of vetted research. OpenThesis.org will ensure that these works, which authors created with formidable investments of inspiration and time, and which universities have ratified as part of awarding graduate degrees, are instantaneously available anywhere in the world via the web at no cost."

These documents represent an important compendium of vetted research. OpenThesis.org will ensure that these works, which authors created with formidable investments of inspiration and time, and which universities have ratified as part of awarding graduate degrees, are instantaneously available anywhere in the world via the web at no cost.
OpenThesis.org will allow authors to upload their theses/dissertations, and the documents will then be vaulted for posterity and made searchable anywhere in the world. If an author (or an author’s family) has only a paper-copy of a thesis/dissertation, the site will give guidance on how to get it scanned into computer-readable form, for subsequent uploading. "
